YOGYAKARTA | KBA – Not long ago, photos circulated on Facebook social media, in the background of an old school, Anies Baswedan looks wearing Javanese traditional clothes, complete with headgear or what is called a blangkon.
“Diversity continues to be embedded and applied in social life to realize social justice for all Indonesian people,” said one of the narratives from various photos shared on Facebook as seen by KBA News, recently.
Responding to the photos, a close friend of Anies Baswedan at SMAN 2 Yogyakarta, Mr. Herimawan Djarot Pribadi, admitted that he was not surprised. Because, since childhood Anies Baswedan grew up in Yogyakarta. Since childhood, he has also been instilled in wearing Javanese traditional clothes.
“That’s how Anies was when he was a child, a teenager until he grew up,” he told KBA News in Yogyakarta.
According to him, in his daily life at SMAN 2 Yogyakarta Anies used to communicated with his friends using Ngoko Javanese. Meanwhile, with older people such as teachers, they are also fluent in Javanese, Kromo Inggil and Kromo smooth.
Mr. “Mas Anies is fluent in both Javanese ngoko and kromo, because since elementary school he has been studying in Yogya,” said Djarot.
Another close friend of Anies at SMAN 2 Yogyakarta, Mr. Moch Iqbal said, the Governor of DKI Jakarta had appeared on the cover of Persada magazine with Javanese text complete with blangkon and dagger (keris). Persada Magazine is a journalistic product at the school.
According to Iqbal, the magazine with the cover image of Anies was published on August 2, 1987. Just when Anies wanted to take part in the Indonesian-United States student exchange program or American Field Services (AFS) in the United States.
Of course there is a special meaning why the former Rector of Paramadina University wore Javanese traditional clothes on the cover of the magazine.
“Anies wishes to spread patriotism, love for one’s own culture. When he was a student at that time, he was infatuated with Western culture, Anies appeared confident by wearing Javanese traditional clothes on the cover of the magazine,” said Iqbal.
The proof of infatuation with Javanese culture in Anies Baswedan’s was also expressed by the canteen manager of SMAN 2 Yogyakarta, Mr. Friday. When Anies Baswedan becomes the Governor of DKI Jakarta, he spared the time to stop by the school, which is located on Jalan Bener Number 30, Bener Village, Tegalrejo District, Yogyakarta City.
Jumari said that during an opportunity to stop by, Anies provided assistance with a set of Javanese musical instruments, the gamelan, to SMAN 2 Yogyakarta.
“Mas Anies came to school, then presented a set of gamelan instruments complete with the holder to the school,” he said.
Prior to this present, he said, students during practice used to borrow from other places. Now that they have a set of gamelan, students can use their own for extra-curricular activities from Anies’ present.
“Mas Anies meant that the practicing students would not need to borrow it anymore, but can use their own, as part of the purpose well to devote to the Jawi culture,” said Jumari. (kba)
