Anies Baswedan’s commendable interfaith communication as the Governor of DKI Jakarta has empowered Christian leaders to offer counsel for his presidential ambitions alongside vice presidential candidate Muhaimin.
JAKARTA | KBA – Representatives from Christian leadership and the Inter-Faith Brotherhood Agency (BERANI) paid a visit to the residence of presidential hopeful Anies Baswedan in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, on Friday, September 15, 2023.
Around 20 attendees aimed to foster connections and communicate pressing national concerns to which both the pastors and BERANI are deeply committed.
Among the distinguished guests was Rev. Gilbert Lumoindong, who articulated two major challenges that Anies should prioritize should he secure the presidency in the 2024 elections.
A significant issue, as outlined by Rev. Gilbert, is the ongoing drug abuse crisis in Indonesia.
Merely incarcerating drug dealers and users following judicial convictions doesn’t mitigate the issue, Rev. Gilbert explained. Drawing from his personal experiences with inmates, he noted,
“Many enter the prison for various reasons, but they leave as drug users or peddlers. Inside the prison, acquiring and distributing drugs becomes simpler and more affordable.”
Rev. Gilbert expressed confidence in Anies’ leadership potential to navigate this complex issue.
He articulated a sentiment, hoping for Anies’ divinely ordered presidency, saying, “What’s required isn’t solely strictness or force, but the subtle nuances of leadership. Mr Anies, known for his gentle approach, is ideal for this. Should divine providence permit, I hope he realizes these aspirations.”
Anies expressed gratitude for hosting such an esteemed congregation of religious leaders and figures. The Coalition for Change for Unity’s presidential candidate diligently noted all feedback and aspirations, particularly the escalating drug abuse concerns voiced by Rev. Gilbert.
“We pride ourselves on our proactive communication with all sectors. “These dialogues not only enlighten us about prevalent issues but also rectify any misconceptions,” reflected Anies.
Anies alleged to occasions when miscommunication or the lack thereof resulted in misconceptions about his persona. From being inaccurately labeled as a liberal during his tenure as rector at Paramadina University to facing radical accusations in the 2017 DKI Regional Election.
“Miscommunication breeds misunderstandings. Throughout my time serving in Jakarta and now, during the Presidential Election campaign, it’s vital to emphasize that we have always been receptive, never initiating, but always responding. “This is essential for everyone to understand,” Anies stressed.
